Older Adults & Families

Learn at your own pace, with someone patient.

Bridging Technologies ATL teaches practical, everyday technology skills to older adults — and gives families a way to help that does not mean doing it for them.

What gets in the way

  • Everyday services — banking, healthcare, benefits, transportation, staying in touch — moved online without anyone teaching the people expected to use them.
  • Help is usually rushed. A relative grabs the phone, fixes it, and hands it back, so nothing is actually learned.
  • Scam messages arrive constantly, and the advice available is either frightening or too technical to act on.
  • Asking for help repeatedly is embarrassing, so people stop asking and quietly stop using things.

What we bring to it

The parts of the BTATL ecosystem that apply here, and what each one does for this audience.

Talk Tech With Chet

Step-by-step classes covering practical digital life skills, taught at a pace that assumes nothing.

Ask Chet

A senior-friendly AI assistant for the question that comes up three weeks after the class, when nobody is around to ask.

180Angles

Plain-language scam alerts and clear steps: pause, verify, protect — and where to report.

What an engagement looks like

A structured community cohort

Small groups meeting over several weeks, working on their own devices rather than a borrowed one. Practical topics — smartphone basics, email, video calls, online safety, apps, and local services — with time to practice and repeat. Continued access afterwards, so a skill learned in week two is still reachable in month six.

Older adults seated around round tables working on their own phones with printed handouts, while two helpers move around the room assisting individually.

What you receive

  • Live instruction in a real room, at a pace set by the group
  • Practice on your own device, not a demonstration model
  • Plain-language handouts you can keep and refer back to
  • Scam awareness woven through every topic, not bolted on at the end
  • Continued access to step-by-step classes after the sessions finish

Measurement and reporting

  • Self-reported confidence before and after, across the skills covered
  • Participant ratings of the program
  • Whether people would recommend it to someone else
  • Reported honestly as self-reported confidence, never as an objective competence score

Boundaries and requirements

What we will not claim, and what has to be true for this to work. We would rather be clear now than impressive now.

  • We teach skills and habits. We do not provide technical support for a broken device, recover lost accounts, or act on your behalf with a bank or provider.
  • Ask Chet gives general educational guidance. It does not replace medical, legal, financial, emergency, law-enforcement or qualified technical professionals.
  • 180Angles is educational. It is not an emergency service and cannot recover money or freeze an account.
  • If you are in immediate danger or a crime is in progress, call 911.
